HEARTS ON THE LORD NOW

Philippians 4:12 NLT
“I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.”

Contentment accompanied by gratitude is a discipline that is so invaluable. While many are after the pursuit of things (and may grow cold in their love for God as a result), others are detached from the LORD for reasons of having too little to live on in this life. In line with these realities, Solomon shared his personal thoughts with God and said, “I ask two things from you, LORD…don’t make me either rich or poor; just give me enough food for each day. If I have too much, I might reject you and say, ‘I don’t know the LORD.’ If I am poor, I might steal and disgrace the name of my God” (Pro 30:7-9 NCV).

On his part, the Apostle Paul had a personal experience of what Solomon said to God: “I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little”, said Paul as in our reference text. Paul had learned and experienced both extremes (little and plenty) and remained stable in his commitment to the work of the LORD. He added, “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength” (Phi 4:13 NLT). Hallelujah! Notice, Paul’s strength to do all things never stemmed from any of the things the extremes had to offer but from Christ—who is constant and thus dependable at all times. Hallelujah!

Moses shares a similar perspective with Paul. He said to Israel, “Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth…” (Deu 8:17-18 ESV). The LORD is not opposed to giving His people the “power to get wealth”. However, “You shall remember the LORD your God” first and above all else. Therefore, whatever stage (little or plenty) you may be at, you can exact endless strength from Christ to remember and serve the LORD your God. Do not wait for when the plenty has come or when you are robbed of everything to begin to serve God. Set your heart on Him now, and His “…blessings shall come upon you and overtake you” (Deu 28:2 ESV). Hallelujah!
