Zechariah 9:9 NLT
“Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey- riding on a donkey’s colt.”
From His childhood, the Lord Jesus went to Jerusalem on various divine assignments. However, each time He arrived in Jerusalem (either with His parents, His disciples, or on His own), some significant things happened. For instance, at His dedication as a child, the word of the LORD to Anna the prophetess and Simeon was fulfilled, and they prophesied (Luk 2). On Christ’s second recorded visit at the age of 12, Jesus amazed the religious scholars at the time with His incomparable wisdom: “All who heard Him were amazed by His intelligence and His understanding and His answers” (Luk 2:47 AMP). Hallelujah!
Another time that Christ made it to Jerusalem was during the feast of the Jews, where He made a public invitation to those who were spiritually thirsty: “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him” (Joh 7:37-38 NIV). This was Jesus’ first public mention about the anticipated outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Joh 7:39)! On yet another occasion, which was rather strange and like no other, Jesus—close to entering Jerusalem—told His disciples, “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it” (Mar 11:2 NKJV).
Earlier in history, the prophet Zechariah had spoken about the foregoing moment, saying, “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt”, as in our text of reference. Would He sit on a throne in Jerusalem like other kings? Not that time; He is yet to come back to sit on that throne; “…the LORD God will give Him the throne of His father David” (Luk 1:32 NKJV). And, the blessed news is, we who believe in Him will be coming (from heaven) along with our King and Bridegroom to reign on the earth (Rev 5:10; 20:4; 21). That day, it shall be a massive and glorious triumphant entry, with the Lord Jesus!
