Genesis 2:22-23 NKJV
“Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: ‘This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”‘
From the first days of the created world, the Person and the ministry of Jesus Christ were depicted clearly. When God created Adam and gave him responsibilities, for example, they were summed into three main categories: Prophet, Priest, and King. Before the fall (Gen 3), Adam served in all three offices in the presence of God in Eden. In so doing, he mirrored what Jesus Christ would do in a greater measure when He would be born. The other significant thing was the gift of a wife for Adam, where the LORD “brought her to the man”, as in our text. Eve was a special gift from the LORD to Adam.
In leading Paul to refer to Jesus as the Last Adam (1 Cor 15:45), the Spirit of God revealed so much of what was concealed in the Old Testament. For instance, like Eve was presented to the first Adam, “…the church is subject to Christ…that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish” (Eph 5:24, 27 NKJV). Hallelujah! In that regard, we have a blessed identity in Christ and mean so much to Him. When Eve arrived, Adam said with joy, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman…” Hallelujah!
Concerning Christ, the Scripture says, “For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones” (Eph 5:30 KJV)! Again, the joy that Adam expressed towards Eve, mirrored the pure joy that Christ would express towards us who are His. Yes, we are part of “the joy” that was set before Christ Jesus, for which He endured the cross and scorned its shame (Heb 12:2). Referring to Christ, the prophet Isaiah also said, “He shall see [the fruit] of the travail of His soul and be satisfied” (Isa 53:11 AMPC). Hallelujah! Let us freely and gladly honour the One who laid down His precious life for our salvation, and loves us so dearly; His name is Jesus Christ!
