2 Kings 3:11 NKJV
But Jehoshaphat said, “Is there no prophet of the LORD here, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?”
The fierce pursuits of King Saul against David to kill him were finally and fruitlessly over. Saul and his son, Jonathan, had regrettably died at the frontline. David sat on the throne and God gave him rest all around. However, because of the good covenant he had had with Jonathan (1 Sam 20), King David asked, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, to whom I may show the kindness of God?” (2 Sam 9:3 NKJV). As a result of David’s kindness, Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s handicapped son was brought from very far, elevated to the place of honour at the king’s table, his fortunes restored, and that favour beautified his life full circle!
In another place, once the king of Israel called upon the kings of Judah (Jehoshaphat) and Edom to help him fight against Moab (2 Kin 3). Stuck on the way without water, Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the LORD here, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?” Jehoshaphat (who greatly honoured the LORD) saw hearing from God, through His servants, as the only way out of their dilemma. Sure enough, the LORD spoke through the prophet Elisha, saying, “…You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water…And this is a simple matter in the sight of the LORD” (2 Kin 3:17-18 NKJV)! God kept His Word through His servant.
In yet another place, the prophet Jeremiah was rightly fed up with the sickly state of his people Israel. He cried out and asked, “Is there no balm in Gilead, Is there no physician there?” (Jer 8:22 NKJV). To all the “Is there no…” questions asked by David, Jehoshaphat, and Jeremiah, the answers were, ‘Yes, there is!’ Thankfully, our blessings were foreshadowed in all three: Like Mephibosheth, we who were nobodies have been brought near by the blood of Christ, and we are now seated with Him at the King’s (God) table (Eph 2). Like Elisha was, in Christ, we are blessed with God’s anointed servants in our midst (Eph 4). And, Jesus Christ is our Balm of Gilead, the Great Physician (Luk 4:23)! In Him, there is an answer to ALL life’s questions; Yes, There Is!
