Hebrews 6:19-20 NKJV
“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
Besides the blessings God spoke over Abram in Genesis 12, He spoke another powerful word over him in Genesis 22, after Abraham did not spare Isaac but was ready to sacrifice him at God’s command. The LORD swore by Himself and said to Abraham, “blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies” (Gen 22:17 NKJV). Thus, the LORD gave Abraham two powerful and unchangeable things: a promise and an oath. Hallelujah!
While the face value of those events had to do with Abraham, the deeper impact was intended for us in Christ Jesus! The Scripture says, “God wanted to prove that his promise was true to those who would get what he promised. And he wanted them to understand clearly that his purposes never change, so he made an oath. These two things cannot change: God cannot lie when he makes a promise, and he cannot lie when he makes an oath. These things encourage us who came to God for safety. They give us strength to hold on to the hope we have been given” (Heb 6:17-18 NCV). Oh, Hallelujah! As a result of God’s dealings with Abraham and, eventually, Christ Jesus, there’s a great hope set before us.
That is a hope given for our souls, which hope can be compared to the anchor of a ship. Yes, “This hope we have [is] as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek”, in our reference text. Hallelujah! This anchor of hope for our souls is, figuratively, connected with the cable of faith to Christ Jesus, who is in the very presence of God! Glory to God that in Christ we are kept steadfast and protected from drifting when the storms of life hit.
