Proverbs 21:30-31 AMP
“There is no [human] wisdom or understanding or counsel [that can prevail] against the LORD. The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but deliverance and victory belong to the LORD.”
Some obvious truths are best grasped when spoken aloud and reflected upon. Take, for example, what our text of reference says: “There is no [human] wisdom or understanding or counsel [that can prevail] against the LORD.” Truly, the LORD God is in a class by Himself, surpassing the wisdom, knowledge, and counsel of even the finest human minds combined. Yes, the Word says, “…No one can measure the depths of his understanding” (Isa 40:28 NLT). On the other hand, however, there is a refreshing joy that’s brought about by the relieving truth that “There is no [human] wisdom or understanding or counsel [that can prevail] against the LORD [our God]”. Nothing surprises or amazes Him. Hallelujah!
Something else to see is this: despite the incomparable greatness of our God, the text appears to suggest that there were instances where human wisdom, understanding, and counsel had attempted to “prevail” against the LORD, and where men relied solely on the “horse” for deliverance and victory. Put simply, these were cases where men tried to lean on their “own understanding” (Pro 3:5 KJV), and to be “…wise in thine own eyes” (Pro 3:7 KJV). Well, aware that there is nothing “[that can prevail] against the LORD”, and that “deliverance and victory belong to the LORD”, it is only wise to trust in the LORD without any hesitation or reservation. His wisdom and understanding encompass not only our past and present, but also all that is yet unknown to us.
Whereas it is our responsibility to put the God-given potential of our minds to use in innovations and creativity that honour Him (and uphold human dignity), we must remain mindful that “The plans of the mind and orderly thinking belong to man, but from the Lord comes the [wise] answer of the tongue” (Pro 16:1 AMPC). Our plans take shape and lead to a satisfying fulfillment when the LORD is in them, and when He Himself directs them. Yes, the LORD has given us a part to play; but He remains the Author of true wisdom, understanding, counsel, deliverance, and victory. Most blessedly, all these virtues find their fullness in Christ Jesus OUR Lord!
