Psalm 9:10 TPT
“May everyone who knows your mercy keep putting their trust in you, for they can count on you for help no matter what. O Lord, you will never, no never, neglect those who come to you.”
The first time God introduced Himself to Israel to some great detail, He proclaimed this about His name, saying, “The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin…” (Exo 34:6-7 NKJV). While Moses had interacted with Him several times before, he had not heard the LORD say that about Himself (on record). The very first thing the LORD said about Himself in that proclamation was that He is “merciful and gracious.” Notice, Moses did not put those words into God’s mouth, but God said them Himself, and He meant them. Hallelujah!
Definitely, there is a lot that God could have said about His wonderful (and severe) attributes, upfront. However, for Him to have picked on those two, at the earliest mention, was equally not random. Hallelujah! Beloved of God, while our salvation from sin is largely a work of God’s grace, our salvation from His coming righteous judgments (1 Cor 3:12-15; 2 Cor 5:10) shall be, to a great extent, a work of His mercy. The Word tells us that it is at the “throne of grace” that we can “receive mercy” (Heb 4:16 NIV). Yes, God’s mercy and grace, found in Jesus Christ, always see eye to eye for our good, and are in our favour in Christ. Hallelujah!
In our reference text, the Psalmist spoke a wonderful thing about God’s name (mercy), saying, “May everyone who knows your mercy keep putting their trust in you, for they can count on you for help no matter what. O Lord, you will never, no never, neglect those who come to you”! Indeed, God’s mercy is His nature meant to draw us to Him, but not to make us turn away from Him to destruction. In that light, when the Apostle John conveyed “Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ” (2 Joh 1:3 NIV) to his audience, that was profound! Oh, glory to God; we can count on Him “for help no matter what”, says the Holy Scriptures. Hallelujah!
