Psalm 61:1-2 NKJV
“Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
The life and the teachings of Jesus made a remarkable contribution to the body of spiritual knowledge concerning things in heaven, and God’s way of handling matters. All the other servants of God spoke of things revealed to them; but Jesus spoke of things that He had seen, experienced, and had been a part of—from before time began. Jesus did not just speak about heaven, but through Him, men and things on earth had the touch of heaven. In John’s words regarding the Lord, “For the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks from the natural realm. But the One [Jesus] who comes from above is above everything and speaks of the highest realm of all! His message is about what he has seen and experienced…” (Joh 3:31-32 TPT).
It was through the teachings of Jesus that God’s fatherly heart and the precious ministries of the Holy Spirit came into much light. Indeed, God has always had a fatherly heart, and the works of the Holy Spirit have been active from the very beginning. However, much of this was not clearly known until Jesus taught us. Through the light of the Scriptures we now have, much of what once seemed dim in the Old Testament suddenly becomes clear. For instance, David’s prayer in our text is so intense; for therein, the three Persons of God are involved. He prayed, saying, “Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” Hallelujah!
Notice, David asked GOD to hear his cry and attend to his prayer; he asked to be LED; and to be led “to the ROCK that is higher than I.” Child of God, what the Psalmist longed for in his day are realities in ours, and for our benefit: God the Father is ready and willing to answer our prayer (Joh 16:23-24); the Holy Spirit is here in fullness to lead us daily (Rom 8:14); and, the only Rock we could ever have asked to be led to is Jesus Christ. More blessedly, however, we were already led “TO the rock” that hour we first believed, spiritually speaking. Thankfully, the Spirit of God is also now leading us “IN Christ” Jesus, who has been highly exalted; higher than us and all other things! Honour and glory to God our Father, to Jesus Christ our Rock, and to the Holy Spirit our Extraordinary Strategist, all of whom are for us!
