John 7:16 AMPC
Jesus answered them by saying, “My teaching is not My own, but His Who sent Me.”
Every time the Lord Jesus opened His mouth to speak, as recorded in the Scriptures, wisdom and grace flowed effortlessly and profusely. Indeed, Christ was God living physically among men, and it is possible that the depth at which He communicated divine truths was capped to what men could understand; otherwise, no human brain would contain His full infinite wisdom. At one point, “The Jews were astonished. They said, How is it that this Man has learning [is so versed in the sacred Scriptures and in theology] when He has never studied?” (Joh 7:15 AMPC)
Well, the Jews were right to ask that question but only from the Man-nature of the Lord Jesus. There is the God-nature of Jesus that knew all things! What could God (the Word), by whom all things were created, ever learn from His creation? Yes, He may have “never studied,” but in any case, the “sacred Scriptures” and “theology” men studied were and are about Him. What could He ever study about Himself besides being the Subject that men study about? Hallelujah! As the Jews reasoned amongst themselves, Jesus divinely knew their thoughts and answered them by saying, “My teaching is not My own, but His Who sent Me”, as in our text.
Beloved, the words and the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Holy Scriptures take the central place. The Old Testament Scriptures point to Him, and the rest of the New Testament Scriptures point from Him. The Psalmist divinely saw this about Christ and exclaimed, “Beautiful! Beautiful! Beyond the sons of men! Elegant grace pours out through every word you speak. Truly God has anointed you, his favored one, for eternity!” (Psa 45:2 TPT). Hallelujah! It is an honour to sit at the feet of Jesus, through the Holy Scriptures, and receive from the wealth of the elegant grace that flows through His words.
