Psalm 121:1-2 NIV
I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
The blessed assurance that God Almighty, His Son Jesus Christ, and His precious Holy Spirit are ours in Christ is so glorious and powerful. What else on earth can ever come close to that which our God is to us: regarding matters of both life and godliness? The saints of old embraced this truth firmly and did great things in the LORD despite their human challenges and life’s adversities. For instance, if it were not for the solid faithfulness of God, the Hebrew brothers would not have the boldness to tell king Nebuchadnezzar that “…the God we serve is able to save us from it [the fire], and he will rescue us from your hand” (Dan 3:17 NIV). Their trust in God was not disappointed; the LORD Himself walked in (Dan 3:24-25)!
The Psalmist equally knew better when it came to hoping in the LORD against all earthly hope. Having experienced God’s faithfulness over time, David would inform us that “When the righteous cry [for help], the LORD hears And rescues them from all their distress and troubles” (Psa 34:17 AMP). Hallelujah! Like the cry of a child that so deeply touches the heart of a loving and caring parent, so does the cry of the righteous touch our heavenly Father. Thankfully, He not only hears us, but He also rescues us from all distress and troubles. In that light, the power of the words in our reference text can be felt:
“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Hallelujah! Beloved, in Christ Jesus, we have the honour and privilege to lift up our eyes to our heavenly Father, and rest assured that He will “…send you help from the sanctuary (His dwelling place) And support and strengthen you from Zion!” (Psa 20:2 AMP). Here is a final word from the Psalmist: “Listen to my testimony: I cried to God in my distress and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears! Gaze upon him, join your life with his, and joy will come. Your faces will glisten with glory. You’ll never wear that shame-face again” (Psa 34:4-5 TPT). Hallelujah!
