WAITING ON GOD FOR STRENGTH

Isaiah 40:31 NKJV
“But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

Upon cleansing the land of Israel of baal worship under God’s directive and power, the Prophet Elijah fled from the murderous threats of Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab (1 Kin 18-19). However, the LORD was with His servant and gave him physical strength through miraculous means. The Word says, as Elijah lay and slept under a broom tree, “suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, ‘Arise and eat.’ Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. And the angel of the LORD came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you” (1 Kin 19:5-7 NKJV).

Elijah arose the second time, “…ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God” (1 Kin 19:8 NKJV). Hallelujah! The LORD did not only use the Prophet for a righteous cause in the land, but He was also mindful of the personal needs of His servant. Elijah’s biggest need in that wide and dry desert was physical strength to journey to Mount Horeb; and the LORD divinely and adequately met it. Though the mode is now largely spiritual, the LORD still does strengthen those who wait on Him. It is an inward strength that keeps us going, serving the LORD with gladness (Psa 100:2), despite the wicked advances against us from the kingdom of darkness.

As in our reference text, the Word says, “those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Hallelujah! In the same way God knew that Elijah needed physical strength, the LORD knows that we need spiritual strength, and He has made a provision for that. However, we each have a responsibility: Elijah had to respond to the command to “arise and eat”; for us, the call is to “wait on the LORD.” This involves, among other things, spending quality time in prayer, studying His word, and communing with the Holy Spirit. Beloved, always remember that it is God’s will that we should be “…strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man” (Eph 3:16 NKJV). Hallelujah!
